Travel to Romania – General information

Posted by

Romania suffered greatly during the socialist era under the dictator Ceausescu. The people were mercilessly oppressed, villages and districts were demolished against the will of the residents and replaced by socialist buildings. The end was quick and bloody. A few days after the successful revolution in 1989, Ceausescu and his wife were executed after a summary trial. Today Romania is seeking connection to the West. Romania has been a member of the European Union since January 1, 2007. Tourism is developing slowly. There are now a few places on the Black Sea for Western package tourists. Individual vacationers go to Bucharest and Transylvania, the home of Dracula. The unique natural landscape of the Danube Delta is also becoming increasingly popular for holidaymakers.

Arrival / connections in the country

You can reach Romania by train from Central Europe, for example via Hungary. Direct train connections are also available from Moscow, Prague, Belgrade, Warsaw and Chisinau in Moldova. Buses and trains go to Bulgaria. International trains are significantly more expensive than national ones. If you have to save money, you can take a train to the border region and then take the bus across the border. Ferries travel across the wide Danube to Bulgaria (often long waiting times). From Budapest you can reach Bucharest by train several times a day.
